I started this because the striper never showed up.
Not mine. Everybody else's. I spent years listening to sealcoat crews complain about it, and eventually worked out that was a job.
How it started
The complaint was always the same complaint.
I was around the sealcoating trade long before I was in it. Crews would come through, fill their tanks, go out and seal a lot, and then come back with the same story every time. The striper did not show. The striper's machine broke. The job is finished except for the part the customer actually looks at, and now nobody is getting paid.
That is not a complaint about pricing. It is a gap. So I bought a machine and asked a handful of them to try me out. One did. That first year was a side hustle, and it paid for the machine and the paint, which was enough to tell me the gap was real.
I spent that winter learning properly, off an online course and a great deal of YouTube, and came back the next season doing it for a living. This is my fourth season, and every machine on the trailer is paid for.
How it works now
Eleven contractors, and no salespeople.
I do not advertise for work and I do not chase it. Eleven companies send me their striping — sealcoat crews, paving outfits and a union contractor running parking decks — and that arrangement holds because I do not compete with any of them. I line. I do not seal and I do not pave.
You get me on the phone and me in the lot. There is no office between us and no dispatcher deciding whether your job matters. Nine times out of ten it is me on the machine; sometimes my son or my girlfriend is out there too, and I am teaching both boys the truck and trailer so that changes over time.
The equipment is bought outright rather than rented, including the stencils, so nothing on your job is waiting on somebody else giving something back.
The name
Nordic, and Lines.
Nordic is the symbol I wear. Lines are what I paint. Put together it sounds like something else entirely, which I was aware of when I picked it, and it has not hurt yet.
I am not the contractor who turns up in a polo shirt with a folder. I did that job once, years ago, cleaning carpets for my father's company, and I was decent at it. This suits me better. What you get instead is somebody who answers the phone, tells you the truth about the weather, and paints a straight line.
